Un popor căruia îi displac instinctiv aventurile coloniale. Louisiana și Mexic.

Prin aceea că nu am eliberat proletariatul francez imediat în 1940 am eșuat în datoria noastră și ne-am neglijat propriile interese. Iar asta este adevărat în aceeași măsură și în privința cetățenilor francezi de peste mări.
Poporul francez cu siguranță nu ne-ar fi purtat niciun resentiment dacă l-am fi eliberat de povara imperiului. În acest sens poporul a arătat mult mai mult bun-simț decât auto-intitulata elită, iar ei au un instinct și o apreciere mult mai realistă asupra adevăratelor interese ale națiunii.
Și sub Louis XV și sub Jules Ferry poporul s-a revoltat împotriva absurdității aventurilor coloniale. Sunt convins că Napoleon nu a devenit nepopolar pentru că a scăpat într-un mod avantajos de Louisiana. Dar a existat o indignare fără precedent atunci când ineficientul să nepot a încercat să rezolve problemele purtând război în Mexic!

A people which instinctively dislikes colonial adventures -Louisiana and Mexico

By not liberating the French proletariat at once in i94o we both failed in our duty and neglected our own interests. And that is equally true with regard to French subjects overseas.
The French people would certainly have borne us no grudge, had we relieved them of the burden of Empire. In this respect the people have shown much more common sense than the self styled elite, and they have an instinctive and much truer appreciation of the nation’s real interests. Under both Louis XV and under Jules Ferry the people revolted against the absurdity of colonial adventures. I have yet to be convinced that Napoleon became unpopular for having rid himself cheaply of Louisiana. But there was unprecedented indignation when his inefficient nephew tried to balance matters by waging war on Mexico!
